The patented footplate cleats help prevent uncomfortable shifting of the brace during play that may occur with competitive ankle braces. The ATOM hinged ankle brace is specifically designed to help prevent the 90% of ankle sprains that happen when you roll to the outside of your ankle (inversion sprains). 2) I've owned a pair of these since 2004, and they seem to do a great job. They're relatively comfortable and allow full motion. I play volleyball about four hours a week, and despite occasionally landing on the foot of another player, I have not sprained an ankle while wearing these.
