WHAT IS ARTHRITIS?

Arthritis is a group of conditions where there is damage caused to the joints of the body.

There are many forms of arthritis, each of which has a different cause and can affect people at any stage of life. The common thread among these 100-plus conditions is that they all affect the musculoskeletal system and specifically the joints - where two or more bones meet.

The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and occurs following trauma to the joint, following an infection of the joint or simply as a result of aging.

SYMPTOMS
  • Pain, stiffness, inflammation and damage to joint cartilage and surrounding structures.
  • Joint weakness and instability.
  • Visible deformities.
Fast Facts about Arthritis:

  • 1 out of 3 adult Americans have been diagnosed with either arthritis or have chronic joint pain & stiffness.
  • Arthritis is the leading cause of disability among Americans over age 15.
  • Arthritis is second only to heart disease as a cause of workplace disability.
  • Arthritis limits simple everyday activities such as walking, dressing and bathing for more than 7 million Americans.
  • Arthritis affects people of all age groups including 300,000 children.
  • Baby boomers are now at prime risk of developing arthritis.
  • More than half of people with arthritis are under the age of 65.
  • 90 percent of people over the age of 40 have signs of osteoarthritis, even though the symptoms such as pain and stiffness often do not develop until later in life.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis refers to more than 100 different diseases that affect areas in or around joints. A joint is where two or more movable bones meet, such as the knee, elbow and wrist.  A healthy joint has cartilage surrounding the ends of the bones to cushion the bones.  Cartilage is a spongy material that covers and cushions the bones to act as a shock absorber for easy and comfortable joint movement.  Over time arthritis destroys the cushioning around joints.  The cartilage starts to break down, causing bones in the joint to rub directly against each other. This causes pain, stiffening and inflammation.  Simply put, arthritis results in bone on bone contact and that causes pain in the affected joints.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a chronic form of arthritis where cartilage between the bones in joints breaks down. This causes friction and pain as bones rub directly against each other.  Osteoarthritis usually affects multiple joints in a patient and is common in the knee, back and hips.  It also commonly affects fingers, feet, neck and other joints.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis include:
Joint pain
Joint stiffness
Inflammation
Loss of flexibility in a joint
Weakness or fatigue
Poor posture or coordination

How Osteoarthritis develops:

Osteoarthritis usually develops gradually and begins with mild stiffness or soreness.   As it progresses, moderate to severe pain develops in the affected joints.  Cartilage in the joint and surrounding tissue break down, resulting in pain, stiffness and weakness.  Over time, even basic daily activities such as walking and dressing can become quite painful.

What causes osteoarthritis?
Age: Years of daily, routine joint use can cause cartilage to deteriote.
Overuse: repetitive motions or overuse can cause stress to your joints.
Injury: A specific injury or multiple injuries to a joint can lead to arthritis and joint pain.
Patient Weight: additional weight causes additional stress to weight-bearing joints such as the knee and back.  There is a strong correlation between being overweight and significant joint pain.
Lack of Physical Activity: Without regular physical activity the muscles around a joint weaken and increase wear on the joint itself.

Arthritis treatments:

There is no “cure” to arthritis, but there are many methods to treat the symptoms of arthritis.  Treating the symptoms early results in less long-term joint damage and pain.  You should consult with your doctor to develop the best treatment plan for your condition.  Actively treating your arthritis can prevent further progression and improve joint function.  Arthritis treatment options include:

Exercise and weight control: Exercising strengthens muscles that help support your joints.  This reduces stress on your joints and helps reduce pain & stiffness.  Maintaining a healthy weight minimizes stress on your joints.  Added weight causes more stress and pressure on your joints.  Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on your joints.

Take care of your joints: When your joints are inflamed or painful they are more prone to injury.  Rest painful joints to prevent further damage to these joints.  The use of orthopedic supports during rest and activity can be helpful.  These supports help protect and support the affected joints.  Some orthopedic supports also provide heat therapy to relieve arthritis pain.

Medications: Prescription and over-the-counter medications may reduce the symptoms of arthritis.  Talk to your doctor to learn more about medications that may help for your condition.

Heat therapy: Applying heat to the affected joints helps relax the muscle around stiff joints and reduce pain.  Hot packs, a warm bath and Thermal Orthopedic Supports are common methods to apply heat therapy to painful joints.
